What Is FP&A?
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) encompasses the budgeting, forecasting, and analytical processes that organizations use to plan their financial future and measure performance against those plans. FP&A platforms replace spreadsheet-driven planning workflows with centralized, collaborative, auditable systems that connect financial models to operational data.
Unlike general-purpose BI tools (which visualize historical data), FP&A platforms are purpose-built for forward-looking financial work – creating budgets, running what-if scenarios, producing rolling forecasts, and performing variance analysis against actuals. They serve CFOs, finance teams, and business unit leaders who need to build and maintain complex financial models collaboratively.
The FP&A market is entirely commercial. There is no viable open-source alternative in this space. Jedox offers a Community Edition, but it is severely limited and not suitable for production use. All serious FP&A platforms require commercial licensing.

No Real Open-Source Option
FP&A is one of the few enterprise software categories with effectively zero open-source penetration. Jedox offers a Community Edition, but it is severely limited:
- No multi-user collaboration
- No advanced modeling features
- No API access
- No SSO/OIDC integration
- Single-server deployment only
- No support or updates guaranteed
The Community Edition serves as a trial/demo environment, not a production FP&A platform. Organizations needing FP&A capabilities must invest in commercial software.

Startup-Tier Acquisition Activity
The startup FP&A segment is consolidating. Two of the six startup-tier tools evaluated here have been acquired:
- Causal -> Lucanet (Oct 2024); repositioned as Lucanet xP&A. Standalone product still operates but is being folded into the Lucanet CFO platform.
- Mosaic -> HiBob (Feb 2025); absorbed into HiBob’s HCM suite. No longer a standalone product; mosaic.tech redirects to HiBob.
Runway, Abacum, Drivetrain and Jirav remain independent. Buyers evaluating Causal or Mosaic should scope against the parent platform, not the legacy product.
