Overview

Mix (18 tools)

  • License: 8 open source · 10 proprietary
  • Hosting: 16 self-hosted · 0 SaaS · 2 both

Audio production software covers the tools that record, edit, mix and master sound. The category divides into two shapes that are often confused and should not be:

  • Audio editors work on a waveform. They cut, clean, normalise and convert individual files or a handful of tracks. Audacity is the archetype.
  • Digital audio workstations (DAWs) work on a session. They record many tracks at once, route them through a mixing console, automate every parameter over time, host plugin instruments and effects, and render a finished mix. Pro Tools is the archetype.

A third shape sits alongside both: the pattern-based production tool, which composes from loops and patterns rather than recording performances. FL Studio and LMMS belong here, and Ableton Live straddles the line.

Choosing badly between these shapes is the most common mistake in the category. A podcast editor handed a DAW will find it baffling; a band handed a waveform editor cannot track to it at all.

REAPER has the widest coverage. Pro Tools and Logic Pro are each locked to a single format, which is the main barrier to leaving either.

Selection Summary

Simple audio clean-up and podcast editing

Audacity. Free, cross-platform, universally understood, and fast for trimming, de-noising and converting. Nothing else is worth the extra complexity for this job.

Multitrack recording and mixing, no budget

Ardour. Mature, professional, runs everywhere, hosts every plugin format that matters. The learning curve is the price.

Multitrack recording and mixing, small budget

REAPER. $60 for personal and small-revenue use, $225 commercial, no DRM, all three platforms, and the widest plugin support in the category. The strongest cost argument to put in front of a customer facing a Pro Tools renewal.

Linux workstations needing commercial software

Bitwig Studio for a polished first-class Linux build, REAPER for the cheapest supported option, Harrison Mixbus for console-style mixing. No other commercial DAW is an option.

Audio restoration and broadcast finishing

Adobe Audition, if the customer is already in Creative Cloud. Its spectral repair tools genuinely outperform the free alternatives, and it is the only tool here that federates to Authentik.

Post-production and studio interchange

Pro Tools, unavoidably. Session interchange with professional studios and post houses is the reason, not the feature list.

Watch list

SoundCraft – an open-source clean-room reimplementation of the Pro Tools workflow, dual Apache-2.0/MIT, with a console-grade mixer already in place at v0.8.0. CLAP-only plugin hosting is the limitation that currently prevents a studio moving to it. Retest when CLAP adoption broadens.
