What Is Reality Capture?

Reality capture is the process of recording a physical space as digital data and then viewing, measuring, and annotating that data as a faithful “as-built” record. Two data types dominate:

  • 3D point clouds – millions to billions of measured points produced by LiDAR / laser scanning or photogrammetry, each with a position (and often color/intensity), forming a dimensionally accurate 3D representation of a space
  • 360 panoramas – immersive spherical photos captured at scan positions that provide photographic context and let a reviewer “stand” inside the captured environment

A reality-capture viewer lets users navigate that data, take measurements (distances, areas, clearances), drop annotations, and share the result. The value is being able to inspect and document a site without physically returning to it.

Common use cases:

  • Factory / plant documentation – as-built records of production floors and equipment layout
  • Construction progress – periodic scans that track build status against plan
  • Digital twins – a visual, measurable representation of a facility kept alongside its operational data
  • Facilities management – clearance checks, space planning, and remote inspection

Key evaluation concerns for this category:

  • Large point-cloud rendering – streaming and level-of-detail so billion-point scans stay interactive in a browser or on a workstation
  • Measurement accuracy – trustworthy distances/areas derived from the captured data
  • Web vs desktop viewing – browser access for broad review vs desktop clients for heavier work
  • Self-host vs cloud – whether capture data can stay on-premises (important for sensitive industrial sites) or must live in a vendor cloud
  • Formats – point-cloud exchange formats such as E57, LAS/LAZ, PLY, plus panorama tile sets and vendor-specific project containers

The information on these pages was researched by a combination of human review and large language models. Comparison

Only f360 Vision has a detailed evaluation so far, so the matrix below has a single row. It is structured to grow as commercial players such as NavVis IVION, Matterport, Leica JetStream, Autodesk ReCap, Faro WebShare, and Pointfuse are added.

Notes

  • Self-host – f360 Vision ships a Docker-based on-prem server, so capture data can stay entirely within the customer network (air-gap friendly). Most enterprise competitors are cloud-hosted.
  • Web + desktop – f360 Vision serves both a browser viewer and cross-platform desktop clients from the same backend.
  • Formats – f360 Vision uses its proprietary .f360 project container. As more tools are added, expect a wider format column covering E57, LAS/LAZ, PLY, and panorama tile sets.
  • SSO – no native OIDC/SAML is documented for f360 Vision; front the web viewer with Authentik via a reverse proxy. See f360-vision.md.
