What Is DR Orchestration?
Disaster Recovery Orchestration is the automated coordination of failover, failback, and recovery processes that restore IT services after a major disruption. While backup tools (see Backup & Disaster Recovery) focus on storing copies of data, DR orchestration focuses on the process of recovering services – automating the complex sequence of steps required to bring applications back online in the correct order, with the correct network configuration, and within defined time constraints.
DR orchestration platforms manage runbooks – documented, automated procedures that define exactly how to recover each application and service. These runbooks encode application dependencies, startup sequences, network re-IP rules, and validation checks. Without orchestration, DR is a manual, error-prone process that depends on tribal knowledge and paper-based procedures that may be outdated or incomplete when a real disaster strikes.
The goal of DR orchestration is to make disaster recovery repeatable, testable, and measurable. Organizations can run non-disruptive DR drills on a regular schedule, validate that recovery meets RTO/RPO targets, and produce compliance reports proving DR readiness – all without impacting production systems.
