License & Deployment Mix: 10 tools – 0 OSS, 10 SaaS. (OSS and SaaS counts can overlap when an open-source tool also offers a vendor-hosted edition.)
Note: Data-primary – exchange-licensed feeds.
What Are Financial Data Services?
Financial data is a data-primary category. Unlike most tool evaluations where the value is in the software, financial data services derive their value from proprietary datasets – real-time market feeds, historical price databases, fundamental company data, exchange-licensed tick data, and curated alternative datasets. The software (terminals, APIs, analytics platforms) is the front end for accessing this data.
OSS is not viable here. Open-source software cannot replicate exchange-licensed real-time feeds, proprietary fundamentals databases, or alternative data sources that require expensive licensing agreements with exchanges, regulators, and data vendors. The product IS the data, not the code that serves it.
Financial data services are consumed through:
- Terminal applications – Bloomberg Terminal, Eikon, FactSet workstation providing real-time quotes, news, analytics, and trading capabilities
- Data feeds / APIs – programmatic access to market data for algorithmic trading, portfolio analytics, and financial application development
- Bulk / historical downloads – end-of-day, tick-level, or fundamental data files for backtesting, research, and regulatory reporting
- Analytics platforms – hosted environments for screening, modeling, and portfolio analysis

Comparison
Financial data services are data-primary products – the value is the proprietary dataset, not the software. All tools in this category are SaaS-only commercial services with no self-hosted or open-source alternatives.
SSO support is mixed: SAML is supported by some web portals, while enterprise terminals use proprietary authentication and API services use API keys or OAuth 2.0.
SSO / OIDC Comparison
SSO support varies widely in financial data services; the notes below assume Authentik as the external identity provider.
| Tool | OIDC | SAML | API Auth | Authentik Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bloomberg | No | No | B-PIPE / BLPAPI key | Proprietary auth; no IdP integration |
| Refinitiv | No | Yes | API key / OAuth 2.0 | SAML for Eikon web; API uses Refinitiv Data Platform tokens |
| S&P Capital IQ | No | Yes | OAuth 2.0 / API key | SAML via Authentik SAML provider |
| FactSet | No | Yes | API key / OAuth 2.0 | SAML via Authentik SAML provider |
| Morningstar | No | Yes | API key / OAuth 2.0 | SAML via Authentik SAML provider |
| Nasdaq Data Link | No | No | API key | No enterprise SSO; API key only |
| Alpha Vantage | No | No | API key | No SSO; free API key registration |

Best SSO support: S&P Capital IQ, FactSet, Morningstar Direct (SAML via enterprise portals)
No SSO: Bloomberg Terminal (proprietary auth), all API-only services (API key auth)
