What Is IP Geolocation / Threat Intel?
IP geolocation and threat intelligence is a data-primary category. Unlike most tool evaluations where the value is in the software, these services derive their value from proprietary datasets – continuously updated databases of IP-to-location mappings, internet scan results, threat indicators, and abuse reports. The software (APIs, dashboards, query engines) is simply the front end for accessing this data.
OSS is not viable here. Open-source software cannot replicate the massive sensor networks, carrier data partnerships, continuous internet-wide scanning infrastructure, and threat intelligence analyst teams that produce this data. The product IS the data, not the code that serves it.
Note: MaxMind GeoLite2 and AbuseIPDB offer free tiers, but their premium/commercial datasets are proprietary and significantly more accurate. The free tiers serve as on-ramps to paid services.
IP geolocation and threat intel services are consumed through:
- Database downloads – periodic snapshots of IP-to-location mappings (MMDB, CSV) for local lookups without API latency
- REST API lookups – real-time queries for IP metadata, geolocation, ASN, threat scores, and abuse history
- Threat feeds – STIX/TAXII or proprietary format feeds of indicators of compromise (IOCs) for ingestion into SIEMs and firewalls
- Search engines – interactive query interfaces for exploring internet-connected devices, open ports, certificates, and vulnerabilities
